Advanced Engineering Mathematics

As a text to learn mathematics, this text is better than average. However, there are numerous errors in terms of handling real physical systems. The author clearly does not understand the words "dimensional analysis" when he describes "real problems". Futhermore, many times the author seems quite willing to change physical laws in order to simplify the mathematics. For any doubters out there, consider the 1/r (not 1/r2) electrostatic force described on page 246 problem 19. Simply stated this text is above average if you plan on learning the mathematics needed to solve engineering/physics problems. However, under no circumstances should this text be used to obtain equations for real systems.

Buy the sixth edition if you can.

I bought the seventh edition because it was required for a class. I borrowed the sixth edition from a friend that took the class a few years ago and was floored by the differences. The seventh edition is exactly the same, except they removed some entire sections, removed some very useful examples and information from some other sections, and rearranged some problems and some section numbers to make the sixth edition unusable for homework assignments.
If you can get a key that tells you which sections and problems correspond between the two editions, or you are just buying the book as a reference, get the sixth edition (significantly cheaper and better).
I am constantly appalled by the practices of these text book publishers. They charge outrageous amounts for the books, make easy and unnecessary changes, release a new edition and force students to buy the new ones so they can make more money.

Not a bad book, but has some unacceptable flaws

A few impressions regarding this order: price for book was pretty high for being used (~$160), shipped in good time, have never encountered this before but the book actually smells funny - I am not too sure if this is from previous owner, storage conditions, or shipping..
On to the product.
I am slightly disappointed by the book for a few reasons:
1) Helpful reference tables and appendices have been shortened or removed that were in previous editions, to such a detriment that my professor actually posts materials on the course site from previous editions of the book to supplement it.
2) I would expect that a 7th edition textbook (or any advanced mathematics textbook) would be carefully edited for precision and consistency. Example problems and even derivations can drop signs or make other errors in arriving to solutions (which are usually right) but it can be very time-consuming checking and re-checking your own work, only to discover that the book is in error.
3) Placing important conceptual derivations in the chapter problem set rather than in the chapter itself is not a technique I am fond of.
Overall the content is of a high quality and the formatting assists in understanding, but being plagued by small discrepancies is a difficult burden to accept for a textbook which has been under editorial scrutiny for many years and costs this much money.
